There is growing tension in Plateau State following renewed allegations and counter-allegations over religious bias, insecurity, and selective justice in the handling of violent incidents across communities.
A statement circulating on social media and attributed to a concerned group alleged that Muslims in the state were being unfairly treated and excluded from political and security structures, while also questioning official narratives around several violent incidents that have rocked parts of the state in recent years.
The statement claimed that key political and administrative positions in the state are predominantly occupied by Christians, asserting that this imbalance has contributed to marginalisation and alleged injustice against the Muslim population.
It further urged Muslims in the state to become more politically engaged, stressing the need for representation and active participation in governance.
It also referenced several unresolved or controversial violent incidents, including attacks on travelers, killings linked to communal clashes, and other criminal cases, questioning why some suspects were not adequately prosecuted or why some cases remained unresolved.
However, these claims remain unverified, and authorities have repeatedly maintained that insecurity in Plateau State is complex, involving criminal elements, communal clashes, and retaliatory attacks, rather than a single-sided religious agenda.
Security agencies have, in the past, arrested individuals from different backgrounds in connection with violent incidents, while investigations into several cases are still ongoing.
Officials have also consistently called for calm, urging residents to avoid inflammatory statements that could further escalate tensions.
Community leaders and civil society organisations have expressed concern that the spread of unverified claims could worsen existing divisions, warning that inflammatory narratives risk undermining peace efforts in the region.
Meanwhile, stakeholders have continued to call for justice, equity, and improved security across Plateau State, urging both government and residents to work together to address the root causes of violence and foster peaceful coexistence among all religious and ethnic groups.
Efforts to reach relevant state authorities for response to the allegations were ongoing as of press time.
