The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) deputy governorship candidate in Ogun state, Segun Showunmi, has asked the President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, to investigate the state governor’s, Dapo Abiodun’s, misconduct.
Showunmi made this call in a statement on Wednesday after a video was released displaying how local government chairmen were prostrating to the governor.
According to him, prostrating is a normal way of greeting in Yoruba land; however, he criticized the governor for posing like an emperor while being greeted.
He therefore connected the incident to the recently published Wale Adedayo’s Open Letter on local government funds.
Adedayo, who is the chairman of Ijebu East Local Government, had earlier accused the governor of withholding LGs’ allocations.
Acting swiftly, it was reported that all 20 Local Government Chairmen in the state, on Tuesday night, besieged the office of the governor as they all prostrated to seek his forgiveness on behalf of Adedayo.
Reacting to this, Showunmi said, “The trending video showing Local Government chairmen prostrating to greet the Governor of Ogun State is not offensive because they greeted in a way that is culturally correct according to Yoruba culture.
“It is offensive because of the Emperor postures Gov Dapo Abiodun, who does not seem to understand that any governor worth the title ought to know that the tier of government, Local Government, cannot be treated in such a manner, especially when the issue might be related to Wale Adedayo’s Open Letter on local government funds.
“Who debased the government by recording such, and who irresponsibly released such? Who approved it without vetting to notice that the irritation of the governor was on full display and has far-reaching image challenges not just for the shameless governor but for all of us.”
He therefore urged Tinubu to quickly look into this matter, as he said local government chairmen shouldn’t be treated that way.
He wrote, “Mr. President, please demand a full investigation. You must use your office to encourage appropriate conduct. Recall that I reported this same Governor Dapo Abiodun to you when his thugs attacked me.
“If a governor can treat local government chairmen in such a manner, it follows that as president, you should subject him to frog jump so they understand the argument on independence.”
