Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has vowed to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election if he emerges as the candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking during a live discussion on X Spaces on Saturday, Amaechi declared that he understood President Tinubu’s political strategies and weaknesses well enough to secure victory against him in a free contest.
“I’ve never contested directly against Tinubu, but I know him very well. I know his strengths, I know his weaknesses. If I’m given the ADC ticket, I will defeat him for sure,” he said.
The former Rivers State governor, who served as Director-General of the Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation in 2015, also claimed he had never been involved in election rigging, alleging that the All Progressives Congress (APC) engages in questionable electoral practices.
“I challenge any politician, living or dead, to say I took part in rigging. All the appointments given to me by the APC to join election planning committees, I declined. I know what they discuss, I hear them, but I will reveal more if I win the primaries,” Amaechi stated.
He accused the ruling party of using state resources for campaigns, saying, “They bring governors, they go to government agencies and get money. I will never participate in any rigging whatsoever.”
Amaechi also stirred controversy with his comments on the 2023 elections, admitting that Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, actually won in Rivers State.
“To some extent, I agree that Peter Obi won in Rivers State. Unfortunately, the result that was announced was different. How it happened, I have no idea,” he said.
