Former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and the Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, have expressed deep sorrow over the tragic road accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Oluwafemi Joshua, on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed the lives of two persons.
The accident, which occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, in Ogun State, reportedly involved members of the boxer’s team and left Joshua and another occupant injured.
In a condolence message issued on Monday, Amosun described the incident as “saddening, painful and most unfortunate,” noting that the death of the two team members was a grim reminder of the fragility of life.
While thanking God for sparing the life of the boxing champion, the former governor said his thoughts and prayers were with Joshua at the difficult moment.
“While we mourn this grievous loss, we give thanks to the Almighty God for sparing your life. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult moment,” Amosun said.
He prayed for Joshua’s quick and full recovery and asked God to grant peaceful repose to the souls of the deceased, as well as comfort and strength to their families and loved ones.
Amosun also extended his condolences to the bereaved families and the global boxing community over the tragic loss.
Similarly, Senator Gbenga Daniel said he received the news of the accident with deep sadness, describing it as a painful development for Ogun State and the nation at large.
The former governor expressed particular pain over the loss of two lives in the incident, offering condolences to the families of the deceased on behalf of the people of Ogun East Senatorial District.
“I am particularly pained by the loss of two lives in the unfortunate incident. May God grant the families the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” Daniel said.
He also prayed for the speedy and full recovery of Anthony Joshua and the other injured occupant.
Daniel noted that the accident once again underscored the need for motorists to exercise greater caution on highways and for relevant authorities to sustain efforts aimed at improving road safety across the country.
The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway has remained one of Nigeria’s busiest and most accident-prone highways, with recurring calls from stakeholders for stricter safety measures and improved traffic management to stem the tide of road crashes.
