Former Ogun State Governor and Senator representing Ogun Central, Ibikunle Amosun, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of foremost industrialist, philanthropist and elder statesman, Chief Olatunde Ayinla Abudu, describing his death as “the fall of a giant in the waters of Nigeria’s history.”
Chief Abudu, who died in the early hours of Monday, June 9, 2025, at the age of 96, was hailed by Amosun as a symbol of integrity, service and statesmanship whose legacy would remain a guiding light for future generations.
In an emotional tribute titled “Eja nla lo lomi: The passing of a great man,” Amosun painted a vivid picture of Chief Abudu’s towering presence in the socio-economic development of Egbaland, Ogun State and the nation.
“This is a great loss to Egbaland, Ogun State, and Nigeria,” Amosun said. “Chief Abudu was a man of great repute, whose life was defined by service, integrity and unwavering commitment to the development of his people.”
He noted that Chief Abudu belonged to the generation of visionary Egba leaders who made indelible contributions across sectors — Law, Education, Health, Business, and beyond. As Mayegun of Egbaland and Seriki of Oke-Ona Egba, Amosun said, Chief Abudu exemplified a life dedicated to peace, unity and progress.
The late patriarch, renowned for his role in Nigeria’s industrial landscape, was the founder of Midland Galvanising Limited, NobelHouse College, and other notable institutions in Abeokuta. His community-focused initiatives, according to Amosun, made him a beacon of hope and development, particularly in the economic emancipation of Egbaland.
Amosun, who governed Ogun State between 2011 and 2019, described Chief Abudu as a dependable elder whose counsel and experience were invaluable during his administration.
“I recall with gratitude how our government benefited from his peace-loving spirit, calm demeanour, and statesmanlike advice, especially in managing delicate matters concerning the four traditional sections of Egbaland. His wisdom was a compass that helped steer the ship of governance during challenging times,” he said.
Chief Abudu was also remembered for his role in elite social development, serving as a Founding Member, Trustee and Life President of the prestigious Abeokuta Club, where he nurtured platforms for unity and excellence among Egba elites.
Concluding his tribute, Amosun prayed for Allah (SWT) to grant the departed elder statesman eternal rest in Aljannah Firdaus and extended his condolences to the Abudu family, particularly his children and grandchildren.
“Adieu, Chief Olatunde Abudu. You were more than a father figure; you were a light to your people. You will be sorely missed,” Amosun added.
Chief Abudu’s burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days. His death marks the end of an era, but his legacy, as Amosun noted, “is immortal.”
