Former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran journalist and media icon, Dr. Doyin Abiola, describing her passing as a monumental loss to the journalism profession and the nation at large.
Dr. Abiola, wife of the late Chief MKO Abiola—winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election—died on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the age of 82.
In a condolence message issued by his media office on Wednesday, Amosun described Dr. Abiola as a trailblazer who not only broke gender barriers in Nigerian media but also inspired a generation of female journalists through her brilliance, professionalism and leadership.
“Dr. Doyin Abiola was a consummate media professional who devoted her life to the advancement of journalism in Nigeria,” the statement read.
“At a time when women were rarely afforded such opportunities, she earned a doctorate in Communications and Politics, a feat that reflected her extraordinary intellect and determination.”
Amosun recalled her early career at the Daily Times before joining the Concord newspaper, where she rose to become Nigeria’s first female Editor-in-Chief of a national daily.
He noted that she further solidified her legacy as Managing Director of the Concord Group of Newspapers, leaving behind “an enduring legacy of service, visionary leadership and integrity.”
The former governor also highlighted Dr. Abiola’s quiet strength and unwavering support during her husband’s political travails following the annulment of the historic June 12 election.
“She stood firm by Chief MKO Abiola during the darkest days of Nigeria’s political history. Her courage and resilience remain deeply admirable,” he said.
Amosun extended his condolences to the Abiola family, praying that Almighty Allah grants Dr. Abiola Aljannah Firdaus and gives her loved ones the fortitude to bear the loss.
Dr. Abiola is remembered not only as a media powerhouse but also as a symbol of courage, intellect, and integrity in Nigeria’s history.
