Former First Lady of Ogun State, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, has funded free lumpectomy surgeries for 11 women diagnosed with suspicious breast lumps as part of her continued fight against breast and cervical cancer.
The life-saving procedures were carried out on Tuesday at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, under the Uplift Development Foundation, her health-focused charity initiative.
The surgeries followed a large-scale cancer screening exercise conducted in September 2025, where over 600 women were screened. Amosun revealed that out of the 535 women who completed breast examinations, 22 were found to have abnormalities requiring further medical attention.
“During our annual screening for breast and cervical cancer, about 535 women submitted themselves for examination, and 22 of them had issues with their breasts.
“We promised to bear the cost of investigations, surgery, and follow-up medication for those with suspicious breast lumps,” she stated while monitoring the procedures at FMC.
She explained that 11 of the identified cases required immediate surgical intervention, prompting her foundation to sponsor the lumpectomies at no cost to the beneficiaries.
Amosun emphasized that cancer is treatable when detected early, urging women to prioritize regular medical screening.
“Cancer is not a death sentence. It only becomes one when people fail to take action or seek help early enough,” she said, appealing to philanthropists and corporate organizations to support vulnerable women battling health challenges.“We cannot do it alone.”
A Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at FMC, Dr. Stella Ogunmuyiwa, lauded Mrs. Amosun’s commitment to the programme, which she said has been consistently sustained for seven years.
She identified cervical cancer as another major public health concern in Nigeria, stressing that early testing remains the strongest form of prevention.
Similarly, Dr. Olabisi Dedeke urged women to avoid the culture of silence and delay in seeking medical attention.
“Early detection is the key. Her Excellency, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, has helped raise awareness through this annual programme, and we’re truly excited about the impact it’s making,” she noted.
The lumpectomy intervention forms part of the Uplift Development Foundation’s annual cancer awareness and treatment support campaign, aimed at reducing preventable deaths through screening, education, and timely medical care.
