The wife of former Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, on Wednesday joined other descendants of the revered Egba warlord and Balogun of Ikija, Chief Ogunbona Agboketoyinbo Mosuleka, to commemorate his 164th memorial anniversary in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The ceremony, held at the family’s ancestral compound in the historic Ikija area of the state capital, brought together several generations of the Ogunbona Agboketoyinbo dynasty, who gathered to pay tribute to their forebear’s enduring legacy in Egba history.
Prominent personalities at the event included the Publisher of Alaroye newspaper, Prince Alao Adedayo; the Asiwaju Onigbagbo of Abeokuta South Local Government, Prince Oluwalogbon Enilolobo; and the current head of the family, Prince Rotimi Meadows Ogunbona, among others.
The commemoration featured interfaith prayers led by both Islamic and Christian clerics, who praised the late warrior’s lifetime of service to the Egba people and urged his descendants to sustain the values of unity, leadership, and sacrifice he represented.
Speaking during the Islamic session, Imam Maruf Ogunbona described Chief Ogunbona as a visionary leader whose commitment to peace and development helped shape the socio-political landscape of Egbaland.
On the Christian side, Reverend Johnson Ajayi of St. Jude’s Anglican Church, Iberekodo, highlighted the late chief’s contribution to the propagation of Christianity in the region.
He noted that Chief Ogunbona provided support to early missionaries and helped foster religious harmony.
Addressing journalists, Mrs. Amosun expressed pride in her heritage and commended the family’s long-standing unity.
“It is absolutely amazing that this family has remained united for 164 years. Our great-grandfather, Chief Ogunbona Agboketoyinbo, left behind a legacy of courage, service and togetherness. We must continue to uphold those values and keep the family flag flying,” she said.
Mrs. Amosun, who hails from the Ogunmakinde lineage of the dynasty, traced her roots through her maternal grandmother, the first daughter of Ogunmakinde — one of the sons of the legendary Balogun.
The annual remembrance ceremony has become a unifying tradition for the expansive family, celebrating not only the legacy of one of Egba’s prominent historical figures but also reinforcing bonds across generations.
