An ex-convict, Emmanuel Popoola, aged 30, has been rearrested by the Amotekun Corps in Osun for committing the same offence.

Popoola, who had previously served an eight-month jail term for phone theft, was apprehended for allegedly stealing phones, on Wednesday, from secondary school students of Ikirun, Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state.

According to the state Commander of the Amotekun Corps, retired Brig-Gen. Bashir Adewinmbi, the suspect had been working as a security guard at a private secondary school in Ile-Ife.

It was gathered that during an examination in June, students of Crown Comprehensive College entrusted their phones to Popoola for safekeeping, as they were not allowed to have phones in the examination hall.

However, he fled with all the phones and went into hiding.

Following the incident, the Amotekun Corps launched an investigation that led to Popoola’s arrest.

Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime.

“The suspect also confessed to being an ex-convict, imprisoned for the same offence in the past and he has been stealing people’s phones in Modakeke and disposing of them in other towns”, the Amotekun boss said.

Notably, the stolen items, including seven SIM cards from different networks, an Infinix phone with a SIM card, casings for Tecno Pop 3, Infinix Hot, and Tecno Spark, as well as an Automated Teller Machine card, were recovered from him.

Popoola has now been handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.
