A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader in Ogun State, Chief Toyin Amuzu, has accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of neglecting the worsening security crisis in the state in favor of orchestrating politically motivated arrests.
Amuzu condemned the detention of Gaffar Asaolu, an aide to Hon. Ladi Adebutu, calling it a diversionary tactic aimed at silencing opposition voices.
Asaolu, the former Director of Finance for the Atiku-Okowa Campaign Committee during the 2023 elections, remains in detention despite what Amuzu described as a lack of evidence to justify the charges against him.
Amuzu alleged that Asaolu’s arrest was part of a broader campaign to target Adebutu, a prominent opposition figure, who himself faced multiple arrests by the Department of State Services and police but was later released.
“This government has turned political persecution into a tool for silencing critics,” Amuzu declared. “This is an affront to democracy and a disgrace to the rule of law.”
Amuzu lambasted the Ogun State government for failing to address pressing security threats such as ritual killings, cult violence, armed robbery, and kidnappings, which he claimed have spiraled out of control under Abiodun’s administration.
Instead of focusing on these challenges, Amuzu said, the government has prioritized politically charged witch-hunts.
“The people of Ogun State are living in fear while the government turns a blind eye to insecurity,” Amuzu stated.
“It is deeply troubling that innocent citizens are being harassed while the state grapples with unchecked violence and lawlessness.”
The PDP chieftain also criticized the recent local government elections, describing them as fraudulent and part of a broader strategy by the ruling party to suppress dissent.
“The illegal arrest and prolonged detention of citizens without evidence is not only undemocratic but a blatant violation of human rights,” he added.
Amuzu’s comments echo growing public discontent in Ogun State, where many have accused the government of intimidation and using law enforcement as a weapon against opposition figures.
Calling for Asaolu’s immediate release, Amuzu urged Governor Abiodun to redirect his administration’s efforts towards resolving the state’s critical security issues.
“The people of Ogun deserve better governance,” Amuzu said. “The government must stop using intimidation as a political tool and focus on ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.”
With escalating tensions and public outcry, the state government faces mounting pressure to shift its priorities from alleged political vendettas to addressing the real issues plaguing the state.
