The Anambra State Police Command has launched a probe into a shocking case in Igboukwu, Aguata Local Government Area, where a man identified as Chigbo, popularly called Agudo, was allegedly chained and locked away by his father for five years.
A disturbing video, which surfaced online at the weekend, showed the moment community youths discovered and freed the young man from a makeshift zinc hut where he had been held in chains since July 2021.
In the footage, Chigbo recounted how he was bound by his hands and legs and kept in harsh conditions without understanding why.
“I have been here since July 3, 2021. I was kept in the rain for one month before I was brought inside here. I am not okay here, that is why I shouted out,” he said.
Shockingly, neighbours said the family had consistently told them that Chigbo had travelled to the United Kingdom, a lie that concealed his imprisonment for years.
Confirming the development on Sunday, the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, had ordered a full investigation into the matter.
“The Command is already probing the disturbing report and preliminary inquiries are ongoing to establish the facts and safeguard the victim’s well-being. Where culpability is established, those responsible will face the law,” Ikenga stated.
He added that the rescued victim is receiving medical and psychological care.
He also commended the youths of the Igboukwu community for exposing the incident, describing their intervention as “a clear example of community partnership in policing.”
