The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has called for the immediate suspension of the upcoming Local Government (LG) elections in Osun State, citing escalating security threats and the likelihood of violence.
The elections, scheduled for February 22, will cover 30 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 323 wards across the state. However, recent intelligence reports have raised grave concerns over the safety and stability of the state during the polls.
In a statement issued on Friday night, Muyiwa Adejobi, the police spokesperson, highlighted credible intelligence indicating that various groups, including political factions and other interest parties, were actively planning to disrupt the electoral process.
These groups, according to the NPF, aim to instigate unrest and undermine the democratic process, endangering public peace and safety.
“The reports gathered from joint intelligence sources reveal that multiple parties, both political and otherwise, are mobilizing efforts to create chaos, disrupt public peace, and subvert the democratic order,” Adejobi said.
“Given the imminent threat to security, we strongly advise the Osun State Government to suspend the elections immediately, in the interest of public safety and national stability.”
The police warned that proceeding with the elections could lead to widespread unrest, potentially endangering lives and property.
The NPF reassured citizens that it, along with other security agencies, was prepared to take decisive action to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
However, to avoid unnecessary confrontations and safeguard the integrity of the democratic process, the NPF emphasized that postponing the elections was in the best interest of all stakeholders.
This warning comes on the heels of a public statement by Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, who had earlier assured citizens and political stakeholders of a free and fair election.
Adeleke urged candidates to campaign peacefully, emphasizing that any form of violence or misinformation would not be tolerated.
In addition to the security concerns, the NPF also referenced the recent legal clarification by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice regarding the judicial status of Local Government elections in Osun.
A judgment delivered by the Court of Appeal on February 22, 2025, nullified the previous decision of the Federal High Court, casting doubt on the legal foundation of the elections as originally planned.
“The Court of Appeal judgment reinforces the position that the elections, as currently planned, lack a solid legal basis,” Adejobi stated.
“The combination of security risks and unresolved legal issues makes it imperative for the Osun State Government to reconsider and suspend the elections immediately.”
The NPF reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring the protection of lives and property during this critical period.
The force urged political parties and all other stakeholders to exercise restraint and prioritize the well-being of the citizens of Osun State.
