Hundreds of protesters on Saturday stormed major streets in Kano, expressing outrage over the recent threat by United States President, Donald Trump, to intervene militarily in Nigeria’s security crisis.
The demonstrators, largely comprising members of Islamic groups, accused Trump of making baseless claims about the killing of Christians in Nigeria and attempting to interfere in the country’s internal affairs.
Brandishing placards with inscriptions such as “We Condemn Trump’s Threat to Attack Nigeria,”
“There is No Christian Genocide in Nigeria,” and “America Wants to Control Our Resources,” the protesters marched through key parts of the city, chanting anti-American slogans.
Trump had recently designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over what he described as the persecution of Christians, warning that the U.S. military would take action if the Nigerian government failed to stop the killings.
However, the Federal Government dismissed the claim of Christian genocide as false and misleading, insisting that Nigeria’s security challenges affect all citizens, irrespective of religion or ethnicity.
One of the protest leaders, who identified himself as Sheikh Abdulrahman Musa, accused the U.S. President of attempting to sow religious division in the country.
“Nigeria’s problems are not religious. Both Muslims and Christians have suffered from insecurity. Trump’s comments are dangerous and disrespectful to our sovereignty,” he said.
Another protester, Amina Garba, described Trump’s statement as “a deliberate attempt to destabilize Nigeria,” urging the international community to disregard what she called “Western propaganda.”
Security operatives were seen monitoring the protest to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
The development comes amid growing debate over the U.S. government’s position on Nigeria’s human rights and religious freedom record.
