APC Urges FG To Withhold LG Allocation From Newly Elected Osun Chairpersons

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the federal government to direct federal funds exclusively to “democratically elected” and “judicially certified” local government officials in Osun State.

This statement follows the contentious local government elections held recently, which saw the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clinch victory across all 30 LGAs and 332 wards amidst a backdrop of legal disputes and security concerns.

The buildup to the election was marked by a series of legal battles and controversies, with the APC challenging the reinstatement of previously sacked local government chairpersons based on a February 10th court ruling from the Court of Appeal in Akure, Ondo State.

Despite the APC’s contention that the court ruling reinstated their candidates, the PDP proceeded with the elections, prompting withdrawals by the APC and Labour Party citing irregularities and security risks.

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, advised Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to suspend the elections, citing legal uncertainties. However, Governor Adeleke maintained that the elections proceed in compliance with state court orders.

Felix Morka, APC’s National Spokesperson, criticized the election as an “illegal and unconstitutional sham,” accusing Governor Adeleke and the PDP of flouting legal judgments and inciting instability.

Morka emphasized the APC’s commitment to legal processes and called on the federal government to respect the rule of law by recognizing only those officials reinstated by judicial order.

In response to the unfolding situation, the APC stressed the importance of upholding judicial decisions and urged local government workers to cooperate with lawfully reinstated officials, emphasizing the need for peaceful adherence to legal mandates amidst ongoing tensions.
