Governors from the South-South geopolitical zone have thrown their weight behind the re-election bid of Akwa Ibom governor, Udom Emmanuel, of their total support.
They said federal might would fail during the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, who is also the Chairman of the South-South Governors’ Forum, gave the assurance at the inauguration of Emmanuel’s campaign in Uyo on Wednesday.
A statement by his Special Adviser on Media Relations, Mr Fidelis Soriwei, quoted the governor as having said that all the governors would have been present in Uyo for the crucial event but for the fact that some of them were also involved in campaigns in their respective states.
He said the South-South governors were all backing Emmanuel’s re-election bid because of his record of performance as a good product from the PDP.
The governor advised the people of Akwa Ibom State to be resolute in the bid to ensure continuity and consolidation of productive governance in the state through Emmanuel’s re-election.
He stressed that as a governor, who battled and overcame federal might in his re-election bid in Bayelsa in 2015, he was aware that second term elections were fraught with betrayals which shouldn’t discourage the people.
The governor said those who relied on federal might as their strongest credential to win election would fail in Akwa Ibom.
He said, “The most worrisome among the challenges confronting the commission is the win-at-all-costs attitude of politicians which involves deploying all sorts of illicit means such as vote-buying, use of thugs to disrupt election process, raising of false alarm and dissemination of fake news to whip up unnecessary sentiments.
“If we must get rid of all the wicked forces that have continuously threatened the credibility of our elections in Nigeria, the political class must change to good conduct in politics.”
