Nollywood actor Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, has reportedly regained his freedom after spending more than three years behind bars for the sexual assault of a minor.
The development was disclosed on Friday by fellow actor and long-time associate, Yomi Fabiyi, who announced the release in a post on Instagram.
Fabiyi claimed that an appeal court had overturned the embattled actor’s conviction, clearing him of allegations of defiling a minor.
“You are now officially free and out,” Fabiyi wrote. “I am also happy you were cleared by the appeal court of ever having sex with or defiling any child. The 7-year-old story is a charade.”
As of press time, PLATFORM TIMES could not independently confirm the reported court decision or the circumstances leading to the actor’s release.
Baba Ijesha was arrested in April 2021 and arraigned on a six-count charge bordering on indecent treatment of a child, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault by penetration and sexual assault by penetration.
On July 14, 2022, a Lagos State High Court found him guilty and sentenced him to 16 years imprisonment, with the terms to run concurrently — meaning he was expected to serve five years.
In April 2024, the actor filed an appeal challenging the judgment, insisting that he was framed and that he had merely acted out a “script” provided by a colleague during the controversial incident.
The latest claims by Fabiyi appear to confirm that Baba Ijesha’s legal challenge succeeded, though official court documents or statements had yet to surface as at the time of filing this report.
