Rauf Aregbesola, former Minister of Interior, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, ex-governor of Kano State, have held a secretive meeting in Lagos to discuss strategies for the upcoming 2027 general election, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The meeting, described as a “marathon session,” comes shortly after Aregbesola’s political group, the Omoluabi Progressives, announced its departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The group, led by Aregbesola, expressed frustration over what it called the “ostracisation” of its members within the party, as well as the unfair suspension and expulsion of its leaders without due process.
They also cited the continuous undermining of the party’s structure as a key reason for their decision to leave.
The APC in Osun State followed suit, expelling Aregbesola over alleged anti-party activities.
Aregbesola, who served as the governor of Osun from 2010 to 2018 and later as Minister of Interior under former President Muhammadu Buhari, has since been exploring new political avenues.
The meeting between Aregbesola and Kwankwaso signals growing discussions on forming a coalition to challenge the APC in the 2027 elections.
This follows a series of strategic meetings within opposition circles as political figures prepare for the next election cycle.
In November 2023, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar hosted Peter Obi, a Labour Party chieftain, to a breakfast meeting in Adamawa, signaling ongoing efforts to unify opposition forces.
Additionally, in January, key political figures, including former Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai and ex-Sani Abacha aide Hamza Al-Mustapha, convened a meeting in Abuja, further indicating rising momentum for opposition coalitions.
Kwankwaso, who ran for president in the 2023 elections under the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has yet to make any official statements about his participation in coalition talks.
However, Ajuji Ahmed, the party’s chairman, noted that while NNPP is not currently engaged in coalition discussions, it has not ruled out the possibility.
