The Omoluabi Progressives, led by former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has announced its decision to sever ties with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This move comes amid grievances over alleged unfair treatment of its members within the party.
In a statement signed by Oluwaseun Abosede, Organising and Publicity Secretary of Omoluabi Progressives, the group cited expulsion, suspension, and marginalisation of its leaders as key reasons for their departure from APC.
The decision was reportedly endorsed unanimously by stakeholders across the 332 wards of Osun State during a meeting held in Ilesa.
“Our resolve to quit the APC reflects the consensus reached among our members following repeated cases of expulsion and suspension without fair hearing,” the statement read.
The group also expressed dissatisfaction with the management of internal crises within Osun APC, which they believe contributed to the party’s recent electoral setbacks in the state.
Former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, addressing members during the meeting, commended their steadfastness and commitment to principles of good governance.
He emphasized the need for the group to forge ahead independently to achieve its vision for Osun State.
“This decision marks a new chapter in our quest to provide responsible leadership and elevate the prosperity of our dear state,” Aregbesola stated.
“We are resolute in our determination to attract individuals of integrity and capability to join us on this journey.”
The rift within Osun APC, exacerbated by the differing allegiances between Aregbesola and incumbent Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, has been a longstanding issue.
Aregbesola’s faction did not support Oyetola during his re-election bid in 2022, aligning instead with a different political trajectory.
Observers note that Aregbesola’s departure signals a significant shake-up in Osun State politics ahead of the 2026 governorship election, with implications for the state’s political landscape.
For now, Omoluabi Progressives has declared its openness to collaborate with like-minded individuals and groups in pursuit of its governance agenda.
