In a collaborative effort, a combined team of soldiers, seamen, police personnel, and local vigilantes conducted a targeted raid on the alleged camps of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, Eastern Security Network (ESN) in the Orsumoghu general area of Anambra State.
The operation, carried out by troops of Exercise Golden Dawn III along with personnel from the Nigerian Navy, police operatives, and vigilant locals, took place on Monday.
Acting on credible intelligence, the security forces successfully cleared and destroyed the reported IPOB/ESN camps, dealing a blow to the separatist groups.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Nigerian Army revealed that during the operation, one of the alleged terrorists was apprehended after being naturalized, while others managed to escape with gunshot wounds.
Additionally, the security forces recovered a pump-action rifle from the scene.
The Army further disclosed that a separate encounter occurred on Saturday when troops patrolling along Orsumoghu-Ukpor Road in the Ihiala Local Government Area encountered what they referred to as “irredentists.” Employing superior firepower, the criminals were forced to abandon their location.
The recovered items included 27 rounds of 7.62 x 51mm ammunition, three locally made hand grenades, two handheld radios, one pair of police uniform, and a fragmental jacket, along with various charms.
The ongoing Exercise Golden Dawn III, initiated by the Nigerian Army in the Southeast region, aims to bolster the security architecture of the area during and after the Yuletide period.
Major General Hassan Taiwo Dada, the General Officer Commanding, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, urged the public to support security agencies by providing credible information through the Emergency Telephone Line 193.
This, he emphasized, is crucial for enhancing the fight against terrorism and other criminal activities in the region.
Despite the security operations, General Dada reassured citizens, encouraging them to continue their normal daily activities and businesses without fear of intimidation.
The collaborative efforts of the security forces underscore the commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region.
