The Nigerian Army has said its troops rescued 31 worshippers abducted during an Easter service in Kaduna State after engaging terrorists in a fierce gun battle.
The Army disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, noting that the victims were kidnapped when gunmen attacked an ECWA Church in Ariko Village, Kachia Local Government Area.
According to the military, troops swiftly responded to a distress call and launched a pursuit operation, forcing the attackers to abandon the captives.
“The pressure mounted by the advancing troops compelled the terrorists to abandon 31 hostages,” the statement said.
It added that the rescue operation was supported by local residents who provided intelligence that aided the troops’ advance into the area.
The Army, however, confirmed that five of the abducted worshippers were killed by the assailants, with their bodies recovered at the scene of the attack.
It further revealed that one of the rescued victims sustained injuries during the incident and is currently receiving medical attention.
The military noted that the fleeing terrorists suffered significant losses during the encounter, as evidenced by blood trails seen along their escape routes.
Troops have since intensified efforts to track down the attackers, with ongoing operations aimed at dismantling their hideouts and rescuing any remaining captives.
To forestall further attacks, the Army said additional personnel had been deployed to reinforce security in the area.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the military urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information, stressing that public cooperation remains crucial in the fight against insecurity.
