The Nigerian Army has rescued 75 civilians from Boko Haram and ISWAP enclaves in Sambisa Forest, Borno State, dealing a significant blow to the terrorist groups’ operations.
The hostages, including seven adult males, 34 women, and 34 children, were handed over to the Borno State government on Monday at the Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, following a successful military offensive under Operation Desert Sanity IV.
Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Waidi Shuaibu, represented by his deputy, Brigadier General Anthony Okpodu, told journalists that the troops had overrun key terrorist hideouts in Ukuba, Njimia, Sabil Huda, Garin Falluja, and Gobara.
“The operation significantly degraded enemy capabilities by neutralising insurgents, destroying command and logistics bases, makeshift shelters, weapon caches, and IED-making materials, thereby disrupting their life-supporting structures,” Okpodu stated.
He noted that the clearance operation was part of ongoing efforts to restore stability in the North-East, safeguard civilians, and create an environment for governance and economic recovery.
Beyond military victories, Okpodu emphasized the army’s commitment to humanitarian efforts, including medical care, food distribution, and psychological support for those rescue.
“During the recent operations, troops provided critical interventions, including child vaccinations, first aid, and the distribution of relief materials.
The rescued persons received immediate medical attention, food, and temporary shelter,” he added.
The Borno State government, represented by Hajiya Aisha Shettima, Director of Social Welfare in the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, commended the military for its efforts.
She confirmed that the rescued civilians would be taken to a state rehabilitation centre for psychosocial support and livelihood assistance.
