Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued seven kidnapped passengers and arrested nine suspected terrorist informants during a series of operations across Zamfara, Katsina, and Sokoto States.
A top military source confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday, noting that the raids were conducted under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the ongoing offensive against terrorists and bandits in the North-West.
In Katsina State, troops of the 17 Brigade responded to a distress call along the Sheme–Funtua highway, where terrorists had blocked the road with two trucks and abducted travellers.
Soldiers engaged the gunmen in a fierce shootout, forcing them to abandon their captives. Seven victims were rescued unharmed.
Similarly, in Zamfara State, troops of the 1 Brigade staged an ambush against terrorists at Magazu village, Tsafe Local Government Area, seizing four motorcycles and an improvised explosive device during the encounter.
Also, soldiers stationed at the Forward Operating Base, Galadi, in Shinkafi LGA, repelled a coordinated attack by heavily armed terrorists riding motorcycles.
The troops, supported by reinforcements, successfully reoccupied the base after dislodging the assailants.
In Sokoto State, troops on patrol arrested nine suspected terrorist informants and logistics suppliers in Yaka, Boto, and Bachaka villages in Gudu Local Government Area.
Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, who visited Katsina on Wednesday to assess the operations, commended the troops for their resilience.
He urged them to remain professional and disciplined while assuring Nigerians that the military would sustain its offensive against criminal elements.
>“The Nigerian Army will not relent in crushing terrorists, bandits, and other criminal groups threatening peace in our country. We urge citizens to support our operations with timely and credible information,” Oluyede said.
