The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has honoured Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, with an Award of Excellence, describing him as the Most Labour-Friendly Governor in Nigeria.
The award was presented during the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Thursday, November 27, 2025, at the Conference Hall of Zeus Hotel & Suites, Mabushi, Abuja.
The Lagos State Chairman of the union, Comrade Balogun Olusegun, received the award on behalf of the governor.
The NEC meeting—the first since the union’s national conference in August 2024, held 15 months ago—had in attendance key dignitaries, including the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammed Dingi Yadi, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, and the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
Addressing delegates, the President of ASCSN, Comrade Shehu Mohammed, said Governor Sanwo-Olu earned the recognition for demonstrating uncommon commitment to workers’ welfare and for sustaining a productive relationship with labour unions in Lagos.
Mohammed praised the governor’s policies on improved working conditions, timely payment of salaries, and consistent dialogue with labour leaders, noting that these actions “reflect a progressive governance style that prioritises human capital and workplace harmony.”
In a major policy recommendation, ASCSN urged state Houses of Assembly across the country to expedite the passage of State Police laws.
The union said such legislation was crucial not only for enhancing community security but also for preventing possible abuse of policing powers by governors once decentralised policing becomes operational.
Secretary-General of the union, Comrade Apebo Joshua, argued that a well-crafted legal framework would safeguard citizens’ rights and ensure accountability.
“We support the establishment of state police, but it must come with strong checks and balances to prevent misuse and ensure that the system truly serves the people,” Joshua said.
In his remarks, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammed Dingi Yadi, commended the ASCSN leadership and pledged the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening labour institutions, improving workplace conditions, and advancing reforms beneficial to civil servants nationwide.
He described the NEC meeting as timely, adding that ongoing policy developments require “collective vigilance, collaboration, and sustained engagement” between labour unions and government structures.
