Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially approved the appointment of Oba Akinloye Olakunlehin as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.

This announcement was made by the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Olusegun Olayiwola, in a statement released on Wednesday in Ibadan, the state capital.

The governor’s approval was conveyed through a memo dated June 14, 2024.

In the memo, Governor Makinde exercised the authority granted to him by Section 19 (Cap 28) Law of Oyo State 2000, as amended.

This statutory power allows the governor to make decisions regarding chieftaincy appointments and other related matters.

The commissioner highlighted that the approval of Oba Olakunlehin’s appointment followed a thorough and rigorous process, as mandated by the extant laws governing ascension to royal thrones in the state.

Olayiwola added that the governor congratulated the new Olubadan and expressed his hopes for a tenure that would usher in significant development and prosperity for Ibadanland and Oyo State at large.

Oba Olakunlehin’s journey to the throne began in April when the Olubadan-In-Council nominated him as the successor to the late Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, who passed away on March 14 at the age of 81. Despite the nomination, the process was not without its challenges.

The Otun Balogun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abimbola Ajibola, raised concerns about Olakunlehin’s physical fitness to assume the throne at the time.

In response to these concerns, Oba Olakunlehin affirmed his medical fitness and readiness to take on the responsibilities of the Olubadan.

His assurance cleared the way for his approval as the new monarch.

The approval of Oba Olakunlehin marks a significant milestone in the history of Ibadanland, promising continuity and stability in the traditional leadership of the region.

The community looks forward to a period of growth and development under his reign, as emphasized by Governor Makinde’s supportive remarks.

The new Olubadan is expected to bring his wealth of experience and leadership qualities to bear on the socio-economic and cultural landscape of Ibadanland, further enhancing its status and heritage.

The citizens of Ibadanland and Oyo State eagerly anticipate the positive changes and developments that Oba Olakunlehin’s leadership will bring.
