A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has declared that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar currently has the strongest chance of emerging Nigeria’s President in the 2027 general election.
Momodu, a publisher and presidential aspirant, said Atiku’s long-standing political experience, resilience and personal discipline place him ahead of other contenders eyeing the nation’s top job.
He spoke on Monday while responding to questions during an X Space session titled “Avrilsspace: The Electoral Mathematics for 2027.”
According to Momodu, Atiku, who has been in Nigeria’s presidential race for over three decades, could make history if he clinches victory in 2027, likening the former Vice President to Abraham Lincoln of the United States.
“Atiku has been running since 1993 and if God favours him, he may likely become the Abraham Lincoln of Nigeria. I leave that to God,” Momodu said.
He stressed that his position was not borne out of blind loyalty, insisting that his assessment was based on political realism.
“I am never a desperate supporter of any candidate. I am a realist. But I believe that today, Atiku stands the best chance,” he added.
Momodu further highlighted Atiku’s health, business success and family life as factors that strengthen his profile ahead of the next election.
“He is in good health, his business is thriving, and his family is adorable. He has conducted his lifestyle in a very simple and straightforward manner,” he said.
The ADC stalwart also pointed to Atiku’s political maturity, noting that despite past disagreements with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, under whom he served as Vice President, Atiku has consistently maintained decorum.
“Despite the occasional skirmishes with his then boss, Obasanjo, he has never uttered any insult against him,” Momodu said.
Atiku first made a major mark on Nigeria’s political scene in 1993 when he stepped down for the late Chief Moshood Abiola at the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential primaries in Jos, Plateau State.
In the 2023 presidential election, Atiku, who flew the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), lost to President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
