Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on Nigerians to prioritize unity and vigilance in the quest for good governance in the year 2025.
In a New Year message released on Tuesday, Atiku emphasized the need for citizens to actively monitor and hold political leaders accountable to safeguard democracy and prevent the abuse of power.
Reflecting on the challenges of the previous year, Atiku described 2024 as a “sobering glimpse” into the urgency of ensuring governmental accountability.
He highlighted the trials endured by Nigerians and credited their resilience and faith as the driving force behind overcoming those difficulties.
“The trials of the past year have only served to fortify our faith,” Atiku said.
“Our unshakable belief in divine protection has been our guiding light, and it is this same spirit of unwavering faith that will propel us forward in the coming year.”
The former vice president urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in their commitment to holding leaders accountable and ensuring no political figure wields unchecked power that could lead to the erosion of liberties or the exploitation of public office.
He also expressed optimism for a brighter future, describing 2025 as a “fresh dawn” that could mark the end of years of national hardship.
He prayed for economic revitalization, which he said would relieve Nigerians from the “suffocating grip of economic hardship.”
Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, further warned against divisions along ethnic and religious lines.
He called for collective efforts in pursuing good governance and standing against actions by the ruling elite that might foster disunity.
“Nigerians must unite in the pursuit of good governance, standing resolute against any efforts by the ruling elite to divide the nation along religious and ethnic lines,” he added.
