In a compelling address during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ibadan branch of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Bar building project, Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, emphasized the imperative of establishing a constitutional role for traditional rulers in the nation’s governance structure.
Highlighting the pivotal position of traditional institutions as the most accessible and community-oriented entities, Fagbemi stressed their vital role in conveying government policies, providing support during crises, and fostering peaceful coexistence.
He underscored the unique proximity of traditional rulers to grassroots communities, enabling them to effectively deter violence within their domains.
Furthermore, Fagbemi urged legal professionals to uphold and enhance the disciplinary mechanisms of the legal profession, emphasizing their responsibility to set exemplary standards for society.
His counterpart, Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Akinlolu Olujinmi, emphasized the need for continuous legal reform at all levels of government to address rising criminal activities.
In a related development, Folashade Aladeniyi, Chairperson of the Ibadan Branch of the NBA, revealed details about the branch’s legacy project, a two-floor secretariat building that includes a gym center and office space.
The project is scheduled for completion before the end of the current executive committee’s tenure in June.
As the call for a constitutional role for traditional rulers gains momentum, legal practitioners and policymakers are tasked with shaping a governance framework that incorporates these influential community leaders to enhance governance and societal harmony.
