A 39-year-old man, Jegede Oluwasina, on Wednesday appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting two police officers on duty. The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a two-count charge of assault and breach of peace. The prosecutor, Inspector Raymond Osas, told the court that the defendant and others at large committed the offences on October 13 at about 9:00 am at Okesha roundabout in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. The National Rescue Movement (NRM) has dragged the Ogun State Independent Election Commission (OGSIEC) to court over the required administrative charges imposed on all candidates in the November 16 local government election. DAILY POST reports that the Chairman of the Commission, Babatunde Osibodu had announced a N250,000 charge on each chairmanship candidate. Councillorship candidates were charged N150,000. Female councillorship candidates are to pay N100,000. The NRM has asked the court to declare the charges as illegal. The Nigerian Senate has commenced the screening of ministerial nominees which were forwarded to the upper legislative chamber by President Bola Tinubu. A Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday ordered that a 35-year-old man, Paul Gyenger, be remanded in a correctional facility for allegedly calling Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State “a chronic womaniser” on social media. Gyenger, who lives in Makurdi, was charged with cyberstalking and defamation of character. However, the Chief Magistrate, Mr Kelvin Mbanongun did not take the plea of the suspect for want of jurisdiction. Mbanongun adjourned the matter until December 17, for further mention.
