The International Committee for Red Cross, ICRC, has expressed worry over increasing violence against health workers and volunteers in conflict theatres in parts of the country. The First Aid and Pre-hospital Care Field Officer of ICRC, Omoruyi Daniel Edobor, said that health workers are often helpless during conflicts. He addressed a group of journalists during a three-day workshop on various methods of first aid treatment and drill training in Calabar. It was gathered that the heavily armed gunmen invaded a Labour Party meeting in a hotel in Aba, the commercial nerve centre of the state. The masked men reportedly claimed they were acting on orders “from above” without giving further explanation. Those kidnapped include the Deputy National Chairman, Ceekay Igara and the Acting State Chairman, Prince G. O. Ndubueze. The Benue State Government has rescued two children from Ukum and one from Katsina-Ala local government areas who were trafficked to Benin in Edo State. This was disclosed on Thursday by the chairman of Ukum Local Government Area, Jonathan Modi. He said the children who were trafficked to Benin were subjected to severe hardship and forced labour. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, said on Thursday that universities and other tertiary institutions in the country can now admit candidates who will turn 16 by August 31, 2025. The board announced that the affected candidates can be admitted for the 2024/2025 academic session if they meet the institution’s standards.
