A Sokoto Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday admitted Shafi’u Umar, a Special Assistant to ex-governor Aminu Tambuwal, to bail in the sum of N1 million. Umar is charged with alleged circulation of falsehood against the incumbent Governor, Ahmad Aliyu and his wife, on social media platforms. The case was first mentioned on August 26, and the Police Prosecutor, Insp Abdurahman Mansur, said the offence contravened the penal code law. An Upper Area Court in Kubwa, Abuja, has dissolved a 16-year-old marriage between Hajarat Isa and her husband, Muhammed Hassan, for lack of love. The judge, Mohammed Wakili dissolved the marriage according to Islamic Law, following Isa’s prayer for divorce on the said ground. Wakili ordered that the divorce certificate be issued to the plaintiff adding that she would not observe “Iddah” because the couple did not consummate since 2022. Hundreds of residents of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, have stormed the State Secretariat located at Agodi to protest the demolition of their houses. The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, on Wednesday, released fresh update on flood devastation and casualties in states and local government areas across the country. According to a statement issued on the 18th of September 2024, NEMA said 1,092,317 persons have been affected, with 641,798 displaced from their homes. The agency also disclosed that 99,046 houses have been destroyed with 285 deaths recorded. NEMA further announced that 2,504 injuries were sustained, and 127,544 hectares of farmlands washed away. A Makurdi Magistrates Court, on Wednesday, ordered the remand of one Adera Sunday, 40, accused of defiling of his 16-year-old stepdaughter. The Magistrate, Mrs Sonia Ayange, did not take the plea of the defendant, a resident of Welfare Quarters, Makurdi, for want of jurisdiction. Ayange thereafter ordered that the defendant should be remanded at the Makurdi Correctional Centre pending further investigation. She adjourned the case to Oct. 11 for further mention. The Benue State Government has said it has taken measures in response to rising water levels of River Benue following the reported opening of the Lagdo Dam and the 2024 flood prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMET.
