    Authorities Probe Alleged Bribery Involving Customs Officer At Lagos Airport

    In response to a viral video depicting a customs officer soliciting a ₦5000 bribe from a passenger at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said it has initiated a thorough investigation into the matter.

    The National Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, stayed this in a statement issued on Tuesday.

    He said preliminary findings indicate that the incident occurred at the New Terminal within the departure hall of the airport and was recorded by the affected passenger.

    Accoridng to him, the video showcases the customs officer making an inappropriate request for ₦5000 in exchange for expediting customs procedures.

    The implicated officer has been confirmed as a member of the Nigeria Customs Service, specifically assigned to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Area Command.

    The NCS has unequivocally condemned this unprofessional behavior, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism within the service.

    A comprehensive investigation is currently underway to scrutinize the incident thoroughly, and the NCS assures the public that appropriate actions will be taken against the officer if found guilty.

    The NCS emphasizes that such conduct is inconsistent with the core values of the service and is determined to uphold transparency and accountability in its operations.

    He expressed the NCS’s dedication to fostering a culture of integrity.

    He encourages passengers and the public to promptly report any instances of misconduct or corruption, emphasizing the significance of these reports in upholding the service’s integrity and ensuring officers adhere to the highest ethical standards.

    Maiwada affirms the NCS’s unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability, assuring the public that the outcome of the investigation will be communicated at the earliest opportunity.

    Maiwada added that the NCS aims to address the concerns raised by the incident and reinforce its commitment to ethical conduct within the customs service.
