The mystery surrounding the death of 22-year-old Afro-Fuji artiste, Afeez Adesina, popularly known as Destiny Boy, has been laid to rest, as an autopsy report has identified drug toxicity as the cause of his demise.
Destiny Boy, who died on January 17, 2026, had sparked widespread controversy following the emergence of disturbing videos showing his lifeless body being transported to a mortuary, with cotton wool placed in his nostrils and ears.
The footage triggered outrage on social media and fueled speculations about possible foul play.
However, findings from an autopsy conducted by the Ogun State Police Command have now revealed that the singer died from “aspiration pneumonitis resulting from the ingestion of toxic substances.”
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed on Friday that toxicology results showed harmful levels of tramadol, its metabolites, and methamphetamine in the deceased’s system.
According to the police, “The Consultant Anatomic Pathologist reported that toxicology results revealed harmful levels of tramadol and its metabolites, as well as methamphetamine, and opined that the cause of death was aspiration pneumonitis resulting from the ingestion of these toxic substances.”
The development comes months after the command launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the young singer’s death, including the arrest of a suspect.
The case was subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department’s Homicide Section.
Police sources disclosed that the case file had earlier been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice, even as the autopsy was conducted to establish the cause of death.
Prior to the release of the report, conflicting accounts had emerged. While an associate of the deceased claimed he had been battling an undisclosed illness, family members, including his mother, said he suffered from a long-term condition associated with seizures, for which both medical and traditional treatments were sought.
Despite these claims, the autopsy findings have now shifted attention to substance ingestion as the immediate cause of death.
Destiny Boy rose to fame in 2019 after his Fuji rendition of Davido’s hit song ‘If’ went viral on social media, earning him widespread acclaim for blending traditional Fuji with contemporary Afrobeats.
He went on to release several songs, including ‘Lamba’, ‘One Transaction’, ‘Gbese’, ‘Billion Dollar’, ‘Mio Gbonkankan’, and ‘Lowkey’, cementing his place as one of the promising voices in the Afro-Fuji genre.
The late singer is survived by his partner, Iremide, and their child, born in November 2024.
