The Ogun State Police Command has invited some kingmakers involved in the ongoing Awujale of Ijebuland succession process over allegations of bribery and financial inducement, in a development that has further heightened tension around the highly sensitive royal transition.
PLATFORM TIMES learnt that the invitation was issued through the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, as part of a fact-finding probe into claims that certain individuals attempted to influence the selection process through monetary and material inducements.
A police invitation letter dated February 3, 2026, and signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of SCID, DCP Gbenga Adeoye, directed one of the kingmakers, (name withheld) to report at the department on Thursday, February 5, 2026, by 10 a.m. for questioning.
According to the letter, the police said the investigation was anchored on their constitutional and statutory powers under Section 214 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 4(a) of the Police Act 2020.
“This is a fact-finding invitation… Your presence is therefore required to assist in advancing the course of criminal justice delivery and fairness,” the letter stated, while noting that the invited individual was free to appear with legal representation.
Although the police did not disclose specific names of suspects beyond those invited, sources familiar with the development told PLATFORM TIMES that more kingmakers connected to the Awujale succession process may be questioned as investigations widen.
The Awujale stool, one of the most revered traditional institutions in Yorubaland, has in recent weeks been at the centre of intense lobbying and behind-the-scenes political manoeuvring following the passing of the late Awujale, Oba Dr. Sikiru Kayode Adetona, prompting calls for transparency and strict adherence to traditional and legal procedures.
Efforts to reach the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer for official comments were unsuccessful as of press time.
