The Babcock University community recently gathered to celebrate the enduring legacy of the late Professor Yinka Olomojobi, an esteemed academic whose life was tragically cut short in April 2024.
The event, held at the Zach Olomojobi Auditorium, featured a book presentation and a posthumous award ceremony, showcasing Prof. Olomojobi’s commitment to human rights and social justice.
Chaired by the University Bursar, Dr. Folorunsho Akande, the ceremony served as a tribute to Prof. Olomojobi’s immense contributions to academia and society.
A highlight of the event was the unveiling of a 17-chapter book titled, Human Rights, Intellectual Property, the Environment, and Arbitration: From Nigeria to Global.
The book, a compilation of his unpublished inaugural lecture notes and scholarly contributions from colleagues, was reviewed by Dr. Christopher Onu, Dean of the School of Law at Adeleke University.
The publication delves into critical human rights issues, including racial discrimination in Africa with Tunisia as a case study, domestic violence in Nigeria, labour stigmatization in Eastern Nigeria, and the rights of the elderly and disabled.
It also explores intellectual property rights concerning traditional medicine, AI arbitration in China, and municipal waste management in Nigeria, reflecting Prof. Olomojobi’s multidisciplinary approach to addressing global challenges.
Colleagues, friends, and family members used the platform to share heartfelt reflections on the values and principles that defined Prof. Olomojobi’s life.
Dr. Taiwo Abiodun-Oni described the book presentation as a “fitting tribute” to a scholar who dedicated his life to mentorship and advocacy for human rights.
Barrister Kemi Osude recalled him as “a man who believed in human rights to the point where he would not have gone down without a fight.”
Prof. Olomojobi was tragically killed on April 19, 2024, by unknown gunmen, reportedly after resisting abduction. Despite the tragedy, his influence continues to resonate within the academic and legal communities.
Prof. Olomojobi was posthumously awarded the Faculty of the Year Award, an honour that underscores his enduring impact on Babcock University.
The President/Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ademola Tayo, praised him as a champion of human rights, saying, “We celebrate the life and legacy of Prof. Yinka Olomojobi and honour his commitment to promoting human rights and social justice.”
The event not only honoured a remarkable academic but also reinforced the importance of his work in shaping a just and equitable society.
