In a demonstration of frustration and concern, Gurasa bread bakers in Kano State held a peaceful protest at Jakara in the Dala Local Government Area on Friday morning.
Led by Fatima Auwal Chediyar, the chairperson of the Association of Women Gurasa Bakers, the protestors raised their voices against the exorbitant prices of flour, a crucial ingredient in their local bread.
Chediyar expressed the dire impact of the rising cost of flour, emphasizing that the commodity, once purchased at N16,000 per bag, now commands a staggering N43,000 per bag.
This astronomical increase, she asserted, has compelled them to contemplate an indefinite strike until a resolution is reached or authorities intervene.
The chairperson highlighted the predominantly female nature of their association, revealing that many of them are widows striving to sustain themselves.
The escalating cost of flour, coupled with financial constraints, has rendered their once viable businesses seemingly impossible.
“We are holding this protest to draw the attention of our leaders to the difficult situation we find ourselves in. Our business caters to the poor, and the current challenges are making it unsustainable.
We are in a precarious situation, and the flour prices have become a drain on our strength,” Chediyar explained.
She stressed that the inability to afford flour had forced them to halt Gurasa production, posing a significant threat to communities, particularly those with lower incomes unable to afford alternative bread options.
Chediyar appealed to leaders at various levels to assess their plight and provide assistance, emphasizing the dependence of many bakers on the business to feed their children and cover educational expenses.
Meanwhile, Alhaji Abdullahi Sulaiman, a businessman and trader at Singger market in Kano, disclosed that they received a new price notification from BUA Group on Monday, effective from February 1st, 2024.
The development has further fueled concerns among those dealing with flour and related commodities in the region.
