Bamise: Family Raises Fresh Concerns After Death Sentence Of BRT Driver  

Despite the death sentence passed unto the BRT driver, Andrew Nice on May 2, 2025 over the kidnapping and murder of 22-year-old Bamise Ayanwole, the victim’s family said justice has not been fully served, insisting that the Nigerian police failed to investigate the case thoroughly and identify the remaining culprits.

The family, at a press briefing in Lagos, expressed concerns over the lack of proper investigation of the case, saying that other culprits mentioned in Bamise’s final voice notes had yet to be identified.

Abegunde Pelumi Caleb, a family representative said that despite the judgment, there were still questions left unanswered, adding that more investigation should be done.

“Where is Bamise’s phone and other belongings? The truth is in the details and her phone may hold the key to unraveling the mystery. Investigations should have been done to find out where the cell phone is so as to ascertain the culprits and their locations. Where are the other individuals mentioned in Bamise’s voice notes and eyewitnesses’ accounts?” He queried.

According to Abegunde, justice will only be served when all perpetrators are brought to book.

“Why is the convict reportedly appearing better fed and looking robust while in detention compared to others found guilty of similar crimes? Equality before the law demands equal treatment,” he added.

Speaking at the press briefing, Kehinde Adeoye, the Lagos State Chairman of the Committee for the Defence of Human Right (CDHR), said judgment was given but justice had not been fully served because the other culprits had not been identified, named and brought to justice.

“The death was caused by Andrew and others at large, so who is going to look for the others? That’s the job of the police and I believe the Nigerian police are very capable to do that so that there will be justice,” he said.

According to Adeoye, Bamise’s phone has yet to be returned to the family, giving an impression that further investigation is still going on.

He demanded that the phone be returned if the investigation had been concluded.

James Joel, another family member, accused the police of negligence and insisted that full justice be served.

“The police are controlled by the government, they are under the executive. Now if they think they want to serve justice in full, cases can be reopened. His case has been closed but there are others at large, further investigations need to be carried out.

“The family is not satisfied with this judgement. Where are those at large, two males and a female? They are not ghosts, but let’s be hopeful. We know justice delayed is justice denied, that’s the summary. Hopefully the government would do the needful, ask the new CP what they think they can do,” he added.
