In a dramatic turn of events in Nigeria’s troubled North-West, notorious bandit leader Dogo Gide has reportedly killed at least 20 Boko Haram fighters in a fierce supremacy battle.
The clash, which unfolded after an ambush attempt by the Sadiku faction of Boko Haram, highlights the shifting dynamics of extremist activity in the region.
A video circulating on social media shows Gide addressing his rivals, claiming victory and displaying a cache of seized weapons.
Among the items were ten AK-47 rifles, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), mobile phones, and an identity card allegedly linked to members of the Sadiku faction.
Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, confirmed the incident, stating that Gide accused the Sadiku faction of hypocrisy and condemned their actions against civilians.
“Sadiku and his group ambushed us, but we prevailed. Only one of our men was injured, while at least 20 of their men were killed,” Gide reportedly said in the video.
The rivalry between Gide and the Boko Haram factions, particularly the Sadiku-led group, appears to stem from personal and strategic conflicts.
According to Makama, Gide was once allied with Boko Haram but severed ties after his brother, Sani, was killed by the group in 2023. This personal loss reportedly motivated Gide to wage a campaign against Boko Haram elements in his area of influence.
Recent reports indicate that Gide’s operations have been concentrated in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, where he has dismantled Boko Haram roadblocks along the Kuruba-Uduwa highway.
In his address to local communities, Gide sought forgiveness and encouraged displaced villagers to return, pledging to restore normalcy in the region.
Makama noted that Gide’s actions are likely driven by a mix of personal vendetta and efforts to consolidate control over lucrative criminal enterprises such as cattle rustling and kidnapping.
The incident underscores the growing complexities of security challenges in Nigeria, as alliances and rivalries among criminal and extremist groups continue to undermine stability.
