Terror returned to Zamfara State on Sunday as suspected bandits killed a retired schoolteacher and abducted three women, including his wife, in a late-night attack on the staff quarters of Government Secondary School, Tsafe.

The incident, which occurred around 3:45am, threw the local community into mourning as the assailants reportedly shot the victim, identified as Malam Kabiru, after he resisted their attempt to abduct him.

A resident of the area who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “We heard gunshots during the night. It was later we found out that Malam Kabiru was killed and his wife along with two other women had been taken by the bandits.”

Confirming the attack, the spokesperson of the Zamfara State Police Command, DSP Yazid Abubakar, told our correspondent  in a telephone interview that the bandits stormed the school staff quarters and killed the retired teacher when he failed to comply with their orders.

“They attempted to abduct him, but he resisted, which led to his death. His wife and two other women were taken away by the attackers,” Abubakar said.

He added that security operatives had already been deployed to the area and were trailing the criminals.

“Troops have been mobilised and are on the trail of the kidnappers. We are making efforts to rescue the victims unharmed,” he assured.

The incident is the latest in a string of violent crimes plaguing Zamfara State, which has remained a hotspot for banditry and kidnappings in recent years despite efforts by security agencies to contain the crisis.
