The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, on Thursday died at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, after collapsing suddenly in his office.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the incident occurred at about 1:30 p.m., triggering a frantic emergency response as aides and security personnel rushed him to the hospital.
Sources at the Government House said the deputy governor slumped during office hours and was immediately taken to the FMC’s emergency unit, where doctors battled unsuccessfully to resuscitate him.
He was confirmed dead shortly after arrival.
A family source who spoke under anonymity said the news left relatives “devastated”, adding that the deputy governor had shown signs of fatigue in recent days.
Although government officials have yet to release an official statement, multiple sources suggested that the sudden collapse may have been linked to a cardiac complication. However, no cause of death has been formally disclosed.
Witnesses at the hospital told PLATFORM TIMES that Ewhrudjakpo was in critical condition when he was hurried into the emergency ward, creating tension around the facility.
Security operatives swiftly cordoned off the hospital premises, restricting access as top government functionaries, political allies, and family members trooped in upon receiving the news.
Efforts to reach his media aide, Mr. Doubara Atasi, proved abortive as calls and messages were unanswered at the time of filing this report.
Ewhrudjakpo, a former senator representing Bayelsa West, was serving his second term as deputy governor alongside Governor Douye Diri.
