Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has issued a resolute caution to local government (LG) chairmen within the state, accentuating the looming presence of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and advocating against financial malpractice.

Governor Alia’s stern admonition came during the commencement of a two-day workshop titled ‘Responsive Local Government Leadership for Effective Local Government Administration in Benue State.’

Governor Alia’s address underscored the imperative for accountability, integrity, and transparency among LG chairmen.

He emphasized the potential repercussions of financial mismanagement, urging chairmen to regard Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) and taxes as communal assets aimed at bolstering citizen welfare.

Directing his message towards the LG chairmen, Governor Alia reinforced the vigilance of the EFCC, cautioning against complacency and advocating for a proactive governance approach.

He implored chairmen to align their actions with public interests, emphasizing their contractual obligations and the essence of democratic governance.

Moreover, Governor Alia delineated the pivotal role of LGs in realizing statewide developmental objectives, stressing the necessity for efficient service delivery and project execution.

He urged chairmen to maintain a steadfast presence within their respective council areas, prioritizing citizen needs and cultivating an environment conducive to effective governance.

In alignment with the governor’s directives, Dennis Akura, Special Adviser on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, elucidated the workshop’s objectives.

Akura underscored the workshop’s role in equipping administrators with requisite skills and knowledge, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to fostering transparency, accountability, and efficient service delivery at the grassroots level.

Governor Alia’s admonishments, coupled with the emphasis on EFCC scrutiny, serve as a stark reminder of the ethical obligations entrusted to LG chairmen in Benue State.

The workshop signifies a concerted effort towards fortifying local governance structures and fostering holistic development across the state.
