Bill To Create Ijebu State Passes First Reading In Senate

A bill seeking the creation of Ijebu State from Ogun State has passed its first reading in the Senate, setting the stage for further legislative deliberations.

The bill, titled the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2024 (Creation of Ijebu State),” was sponsored by Senator Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East Senatorial District.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, Senate Majority Leader, Michael Bamidele of the All Progressives Congress (APC), formally introduced the proposal.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio facilitated the process, advancing the bill to its first reading, a significant procedural step in the legislative process.

The proposal will now undergo detailed discussions, evaluations, and subsequent readings before any final approval can be made.

The push for Ijebu State comes amid increasing national demands for administrative decentralization.

Advocates for the bill argue that creating new states could foster improved governance, enhance economic development, and strengthen political representation in underserved regions.

If the legislative process is successfully concluded, Ijebu State would emerge as an independent entity, with governance structures separate from Ogun State.

PLATFORM TIMES  reports that the  development is expected to ignite debates on the broader implications of state creation in Nigeria, particularly in addressing the challenges of federalism and regional equity.
