In a devastating assault on the Nigerian Army, Boko Haram terrorists attacked a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State, killing an unspecified number of soldiers and leaving many others missing.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, January 4, 2025, lasted over two hours, with sources revealing that the terrorists deployed heavy weaponry to overpower the 25 Taskforce Brigade stationed at the base.
A security source confirmed the scale of the carnage:“The 25 Taskforce Brigade was attacked over the weekend, resulting in significant casualties. So far, over seven bodies have been recovered.”
The insurgents also razed several buildings and destroyed numerous military operational vehicles during the siege.
This attack underscores the increasing threat posed by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a faction of Boko Haram.
Following the death of Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, ISWAP has solidified its presence around Lake Chad, recruiting hundreds of former Boko Haram fighters and intensifying its operations.
The Nigerian Army, in a statement following the attack, reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating terrorism in the country.
However, this latest incident highlights the persistent challenges in the fight against insurgency, particularly in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states, where millions have been displaced and countless lives lost over the years.
