Two Nigerian soldiers were killed and several others injured on Monday when Boko Haram insurgents launched a deadly dawn raid on a military base in the Rann area of Kala Balge Local Government Area, Borno State.
Military sources told PLATFORM TIMES that the heavily armed militants stormed the base belonging to the Nigerian Army’s CIO Battalion in the early hours, overwhelming troops with sustained gunfire.
The insurgents reportedly set armoured tanks ablaze and made away with an undisclosed cache of ammunition.
According to insiders, the attack was so fierce that some soldiers abandoned their positions and crossed into neighbouring Cameroon with their rifles in a bid to escape death.
“They killed two of our soldiers and injured many others,” a source disclosed. “Those who managed to escape fled with their arms into Cameroon.”
The latest assault comes barely months after 22 soldiers, including a commanding officer, were killed in Malam-Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area — another deadly strike that exposed the persistent threat of insurgency in the North-East despite official claims of victory.
Since 2009, Boko Haram’s insurgency has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
Troops on the frontlines have repeatedly lamented poor weaponry and inadequate support, accusing military authorities of leaving them vulnerable against better-armed insurgents.
While the Defence Headquarters often downplays battlefield losses, Monday’s attack adds to a growing list of violent setbacks undermining government assurances that the terrorists have been “technically defeated.”
