Several Nigerian soldiers are feared dead after Boko Haram insurgents overran a military base in Borno State, dislodging troops and carting away weapons and equipment.
The attack, which occurred around midnight on Thursday, targeted the 152 Task Force Battalion located in Banki town, Bama Local Government Area, a border community close to Cameroon.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the terrorists stormed the base in large numbers, engaging the troops in a fierce gun battle before taking control of the facility.
Sources said armoured tanks and military vehicles were destroyed, while an unconfirmed number of soldiers fled into Cameroon for safety.
“Yesterday, 152 TF Battalion close to Banki town under Bama LGA was dislodged by Boko Haram terrorists. They took charge of the base for several hours, stealing military equipment and ammunition. As we speak, casualties are still unknown,” a military source disclosed.
Another source confirmed the development, noting that several soldiers remain missing. “Yes, 152 Battalion was attacked on Thursday.
The base is close to the Cameroon border. Many of our men are still missing, and dozens of vehicles were destroyed during the assault,” the source added.
The Nigerian Army has yet to issue an official statement on the attack as of press time.
This latest onslaught comes despite repeated claims by the military that Boko Haram and its splinter group, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have been significantly degraded in the North-East.
For nearly two decades, the insurgency has devastated Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states, leaving more than 100,000 people dead and displacing millions.
Troops engaged in Operation Hadin Kai have consistently raised concerns about inadequate weaponry compared to the superior firepower of the insurgents.
