The Borno State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested a couple for severely flogging an 11-year-old schoolgirl who allegedly entered their compound to pluck mangoes.

The command’s spokesperson, Nahum Kenneth Daso, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday, noting that the couple was apprehended after a disturbing video of the assault surfaced on social media.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on March 19, 2025, when the minor, Hauwa Mohammed Goni, a Primary 5 pupil of Bolori Primary School, Federal Low Cost, Maiduguri, entered the residence of 33-year-old Muhammad Shetima in the Pompomari area to pick mangoes.

“In response, Mr. Shetima and his wife, Mrs. Aishatu Abubakar, 23 years old, accosted the child and subjected her to severe flogging.

During the assault, Mrs. Aishatu Abubakar recorded the incident and shared the video on social media,” the statement read.

Outrage from civil society groups and concerned citizens led to swift intervention, with a legal petition filed by Potential Attorneys prompting security operatives to take action.

The victim was subsequently taken to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where she is receiving medical care and responding to treatment.

Meanwhile, the suspects are currently being detained at the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where investigations are ongoing.

The command assured the public that the case would be thoroughly investigated and that the couple would be prosecuted under the relevant sections of the Child Protection Law and the state’s Penal Code.
