In a swift and firm response, the immediate-past Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, has refuted allegations of his involvement in the illegal withdrawal of $6.3 million from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The accusations, brought to light by an online newspaper, implicated Mustapha and the former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, alleging their authorization of the cash removal weeks before the 2023 presidential election.
The report claimed that a special investigator appointed by President Bola Tinubu uncovered the alleged theft, with CCTV footage purportedly capturing the movement of money from the CBN’s vault. Mustapha, in a strongly worded statement, vehemently rejected the accusations, labeling them as “outrageous and unsubstantiated.”
Describing the article as a “malicious fabrication” and an “orchestrated” attempt to tarnish his character, Mustapha asserted his ignorance of the alleged “Presidential Directive” cited in the report.
He emphasized that he was not part of any discussions or transactions related to payments for foreign election observers.
Questioning the timing of the allegations, Mustapha highlighted the sensitive pre-Christmas period, suggesting a deliberate effort to exploit public sentiment.
He called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter, urging authorities to uncover the source of the fabricated documents and expose those behind the “smear” campaign.
In his statement, Mustapha said, “I demand a thorough and transparent investigation into this matter. Let the relevant authorities probe the source of these fabricated documents and expose those responsible for this malicious attempt to damage my reputation.
I have nothing to hide and welcome any legitimate investigation that sheds light on the truth.”
Emphasizing his commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity throughout his public service career, Mustapha asserted that he would vigorously defend his reputation.
He framed the situation as not just a personal matter but one concerning the integrity of public service and the reputation of those who have served the country honorably.
