The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a directive urging Nigerians, including civil servants, to boycott the services of MTN, Airtel, and Glo starting February 13, 2025.
This action is in response to a recent 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs.
In a communiqué released on Wednesday from Lokoja, Kogi State, the NLC Central Working Committee, represented by President Joe Ajaero and Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, demanded an immediate reversal of the tariff hike.
They insist that the telecommunications companies revert to the previous tariff until further deliberations are concluded.
Effective February 13, 2025, citizens are encouraged to boycott the services of these telecom giants daily between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM until the end of February.
The NLC expressed discontent over what they termed the exploitation of Nigerians through data charges, calling for the repatriation of funds allegedly siphoned abroad by these companies.
Should the telecom companies fail to comply by the end of February, a nationwide total shutdown of their operations will begin from March 1, 2025.
The NLC has instructed its affiliate unions to mobilize members across the country to observe the shutdown during the designated hours on selected days.
This directive follows the establishment of a 10-man committee between the NLC and the Federal Government to deliberate on the tariff hike.
The committee has been given two weeks to review and report back before any final decision on the new telecom tariff structure is made.
The Congress accused both telecom companies and the Federal Government of disregarding due process and failing to protect citizens from corporate exploitation.
