The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has  issued a cautionary statement, announcing that the current spell of excessive heat in the country is expected to persist.

The advisory, posted on NiMET’s official platform on Wednesday, outlined the implications of the soaring temperatures and offered guidance to the public on coping strategies.

According to NiMET, air temperatures have soared to 41°C in the North and 39°C in the South, with model projections indicating a continuation of the high temperatures in the upcoming days.

On the Implications of the Heatwave, the agency highlighted potential consequences, including dehydration leading to fainting, chickenpox disease, measles, heat rash, weakness of the body, slight fever, and dry lips.

Additionally, the prolonged exposure to high temperatures could result in heat-related illnesses, respiratory issues, and increased vulnerability to chronic conditions.

While advising  the Public,NiMET provided practical recommendations to mitigate the effects of the heatwave:

    1. Maintain adequate fluid intake.
    2. Seek shade, utilize fans, and wear light, breathable clothing to reduce exposure to high temperatures.
    3. Avoid strenuous physical activity during peak heat hours, advocating for staying indoors as much as possible between 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm.

As Nigerians brace themselves for an extended period of extreme heat, adhering to these advisories becomes crucial for safeguarding against the potential health risks associated with the ongoing weather conditions.
