Confusion and anxiety have gripped parents and candidates in Ogun State following the seizure of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results by the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
The development has left many families in distress as they await clarity on the fate of their children’s academic progression.
Investigations by PLATFORM TIMES revealed that numerous public secondary schools in the state have been affected by the seizure, with the certificates of candidates withheld due to the state’s indebtedness to WAEC.
Affected schools include Igiri High School in Ijofin, Agosasa, Ipokia, Pakoto High School in Ayede, Ifo, and Iganmode Grammar School 2 in Ota.
However, it remains unclear whether all public schools across Ogun State have been impacted by the situation.
Sources within the education sector in Ogun State disclosed that the Dapo Abiodun administration had asked parents to pay the examination fees for their wards.
The government was then expected to remit these funds to WAEC. However, it is yet to be confirmed whether a failure to remit these funds by the state government is responsible for the seizure of the results.
The uncertainty has sparked widespread concern among parents, who now fear that their children’s academic and future prospects could be jeopardized if the issue is not swiftly resolved.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the situation is particularly alarming as the WASSCE results are crucial for candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions.
Several attempts to reach the Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu for comments were unsuccessful, as calls to his line did not go through.
The silence from the government has only fueled the growing anxiety among the affected families, who are demanding urgent intervention to secure the release of the certificates.
