In a pivotal development, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have decided to call off the nationwide strike that commenced two days ago, following a crucial meeting with the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
The government delegation, led by Ribadu and including the Minister of Labour, Simon Lalong, and Minister of State, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, engaged in discussions aimed at finding a resolution to the pressing issues that prompted the industrial action.
Minister Lalong, addressing reporters after the meeting, revealed that the government appealed to the labor leaders to reconsider the strike, emphasizing the collective interest of the nation.
The plea, it seems, bore fruit as the TUC President, Festus Osifo, acknowledged hearing the government’s position.
However, he announced that the delegation would return to brief the NLC and TUC on the outcomes of the discussions.
After internal consultations among the labor executives, it was unanimously decided to call off the strike.
The organized labor had initiated the protest in response to the reported brutalization of the National President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and the government’s perceived failure to implement agreements reached on October 2, 2023.
One of the key issues was addressing the removal of fuel subsidies in the country.
This resolution marks a crucial turning point in the ongoing dialogue between labor and the government, with both parties now tasked with working towards a sustainable and mutually beneficial way forward.
